Rose - For the Physical and Emotional Heart
Spotlight on a Plant Ally
Rosa spp.
In herbalism, Rose (Rosaceae spp.) is often considered a "nervine" (soothes the nervous system) and gentle cardiotonic (tones the heart). The high concentration of antioxidants and bioflavonoids in rose petals and hips helps strengthen the heart muscle and improve circulation, making it a literal ally for the "physical heart."
And rose doesn't just treat the physical heart; it treats the emotional one. Inhaling the scent of rose or taking a rose glycerite can lower cortisol levels and move the body from "fight or flight" into "rest and digest.
It is used to soothe anxiety, lift the spirits during depression, and provide a sense of protection during periods of deep grief or emotional trauma.
Rose petals and hips help tone and tighten tissues, which is why they are so prevalent in skincare, including our Rose & Piñon Facial Serum. Rosehips are one of the most concentrated plant sources of Vitamin C, making them great for immune support.
In Greek myth, the red rose was created when Aphrodite rushed to her dying lover, Adonis. She pricked her foot on a white rose thorn, and her blood turned the flowers red. The rose is a symbol of love that transcends death. In many traditions, the thorns represent the boundaries necessary for love to flourish. They remind us that to protect the soft, vulnerable heart (the bloom), we must have strong, healthy defenses.
Ancient Romans celebrated 'Rosalia' by placing roses on the graves of loved ones, believing the flower's spirit could bridge the gap between the living and the dead. Whether used to honor a memory or proclaim new love, the Rose remains a sacred guardian of the heart.
The word Rosary comes from the Latin rosarium, meaning a rose garden or a garland of roses. Traditionally, the beads were sometimes made of crushed rose petals rolled into clay. Praying the rosary was seen as offering a "bouquet" to the divine. This makes rose an excellent ally for ritual and prayer, specifically for those honoring ancestors or lost loved ones.
